Not sure what time of year you are planning to arrive.
The climate is very similar to Bali.
I estimate you would have approx 5 hours.
The best idea is to hire a small car which should be less than $55.
You can store your luggage at the airport I believe or take it with you in the car.
The closest attraction to the Airport is Crocodilis Park. They have a website if you google it with all the info.

The Airport is fair way from the City. The city of Darwin is on a very small peninsula. Most of the attractions are outside of the City. However there is a new facility opened called Crocosaurus Cove.
It has a web site too. Looks amazing however I have not been there yet.

Fish Feeding at Doctors Gully is very amazing - just outside the city Centre. You need to check feeding times on their website.

Darwin is a great place to drive around and look at the foreshore, Bays and Springs. You may email me for some suggested tour routes if you wish.
Regards
