The relatives and friends who help with the wedding in any way are usually invited to take their selection of the gifts first, the wedded couple getting what is left if anything. Friends relate the sytory of the set of brown ramekins that were recycled through 3 weddings before they were fortuitously dropped and broken.
The best way seems to be to select two gifts; one for the wedding and another given a few days later in a private meeting.
