Pupuan is on the road which is an alternate way of getting to north Bali. Go through Tabanan until you get to a place called Antosari. Turn right (turning left takes you along the coast to places like Medewi) and head into the mountains through Belimbing and Pujungan.
At Pupuan, I was taken aback by the beauty. I walked along roads that had bubbling cascades of water running through different levels of rice terraces right next to you and they were enclosed by coconut and banana trees. I could wander off the road and watch workers tending the fields and have no extraneous noise whatsoever. Every turn led to another beautiful scenario. It was magical.
When I came back (I was staying at Legian), I headed south west from Pupuan on a road that wasn't the best but the scenery was fantastic heading toward the coast and ended up going through Bunut Lobang where the road passes through the middle of a tree. The road joins the coast just near Medewi.
I was on the back of a bike. My driver knew exactly where to go (I'd told him I wanted to take some photos of rice fields and terraces) so we started early (he picked me up at 6.30am) and we went via the back of Canggu for some stunning scenery pictures.
It was a long day in the saddle but well worth it as the images I got were, in my opinion, quintessential Bali.
The driver I used was Wayan Budiarta and you can contact him by email on roundaboutbali@yahoo.com or text him on +62 812 390 5344. He's not cheap but believe me he hit the nail on the head with the places he knew I wanted to see. A quality driver.
Jatiluwih is spectacular due to the sheer size of the rice fields and the temple you're talking about (Pura Luhur Batukau)is worth a look but for experiencing a Bali often talked about but rarely experienced Pupuan is the place to go. The trip there and back is great too as I got not only mountain but coastal vistas as well.
