when traveling with my husband, Myself or him will go through the metal detector first the other will stay back with all the hand luggage and I only put it through the x-ray when he's through and at the other end to collect it. Even let someone else go through in between us if nessesary. Easy to do if you are traveling with someone ( which most times you are ) obviously not poss by yourself.
Also try NOT to put wallets etc loose in the plastic trays. Hubby always gives me his wallet and I zip it away in my handbag for it to go through.
Guys could put wallets / phones etc in their cabin bag or at least in a small plastic bag just so it not obvious that there is a big wad of cash sitting there tempting someone to pocket it.
Another thing is to lock your hand luggage this way if there really is some item they see on the x-ray and want to inspect they will just get you to open it. At least you will be right there watching them look through your stuff.
