in March, June and September to Bali and in all honesty anytime is great!
However, it rained more in March and was VERY humid. In September I found sometimes it wasn't quite warm enough to go for a swim but sitting by the pool was okay if you weren't in the shade. Not sure how different Sept is than August though.
I can remember June (went in 05 and it was my first time to Bali) being quite pleasant but that is about it.
As for crowds, sorry can't comment because I was there just before the 2nd bombings in June 05, just after them in Mar 06 and as Bali was coming alive again in Sept 06.
