pronounciation to be important.
like pagee v's Pagi and Kandi Dasa Vs Chandi Dasa.
A simple example of differences is that when an Aussie says Kuta, they emphasise the "U", whereas the locals emphasise the "A" as in Kutaaa.
However, do not let this put you off, as I am sure many of the locals are well used to their language being butchered by people like me, and they are genuinely pleased that you have taken the trouble to try.
Spend some time with someone one on one, and learn some basics.
One thing though, if you proudly learn to fluently say "How much is this please?" you will get a lengthy burst of bahasa Indonesia in response, and then have to explain..."sorry (maaf) but I am only learning"!!
