I've never been refused a same day booking, and for a year regularly commuted between Lombok and Perth. Luckily I also never had a flight cancelled. It does happen from time to time with Merpati, so I generally flew with another airline. I would catch the 4.30 ex Lombok and the 7.50 ex Bali.
Honestly, unless you have some reason to go to Bali, why would you overnight just on the off chance a flight is cancelled.
