I personally like to take a Messenger type bag that goes over my shoulder, across my body and sits down on my waist. These keeps both hands free to shop with! but also means I dont have to take it off every time I need to get something out as you do with a back pack. I have a large slouchy one which is so comfy I hardly know its there - and it zips up securely and easily.
