There are pick pockets as there are any other place in the world, so caution is required.
I use a back pack style. Leaves both hands free to shop and if it gets heave, its easier to carry on your back.
A lot of ppl have fanny packs. A lot wear them under their t shirts.
At the end of the day it is what you are comfortable with.
