We always take cash and we are a family of 4. We usually take out 2x $100 at a time and get this exchanged, leaving the rest in the hotel safety deposit box. As you run out, you just keep getting into your aussie dollar stash.
Make sure you keep $150,000 (I think its gone up from $100,000 )rupiah to pay your departure tax when you leave Bali. We always keep this separate in our safety deposit box so we don't spend it.
