I make sure I am very specific in my wording, especially when confirming the details : dates, how many people in the room, what type of room , tax included, breakfast etc, I print a copy of all emails with the important info high lighted for quick reference.
I'm sure I drive them mad as I will even state " please confirm we have booked a beach front cottage, as we don't want to be behind another cottage " or I will ask, " will our room have a nice view ? ". Like I said very specific lol, but it works, I have always had what I was expecting, actually the only hotel/room I haven't liked in the last few years, was a hotel booked through a travel agent!
I look at "Trip Advisor" under hotel reviews, is a good place to check out hotels and read about travellers experiences with them, it will give you an idea if others have had certain problems with the hotel, asking for opinions on travel forums is great as well!
We have booked lots of holidays over the net including hotels, transfers, car hire and tours, we haven't yet had a problem(touch wood), but I do it with the attitude that if some thing goes wrong it will add to our adventure! and I do a LOT of research before I book.
