KK and Sandakan are terrific destinations. Are you going to the orangutan rehab and Turtle Island while you are visiting Sandakan?
I've taken short Air Asia flights, much shorter than the one you have booked, and there were no problems. Make sure you get window seats from KK to Sandakan. The scenery below is truly breathtaking. You've certainly planned a great holiday :)
