you are right as we didn't know it was illegal as shops were selling them everywhere. We only used the sky rocket ones and a few of the fountain ones and cleaned up our mess after. We understood the Banjar Police saying that they are illegal so we will be respecting their laws which is the right thing to do in their country and think others should follow suit.
