Personally we find it easier than having to cash travellers cheques where you need your passport as evidence. Some will accept a photocopy, some won't bother with the passport because you've been cashing your cheques there for a few days but some will insist.
As for sunbathing topless, its generally disrespectful to the beliefs and culture of the Indonesians. It's up to you whether or not you want to be looked down on by some.
