on ages of kids definately stay a litle longer in kuta/legian area for shopping and perhaps at the end of trip. Less carting of shopping around as you move. Ubud is great base for cycling, white water rafting, safrai park etc so definately spend at least 3 nights there. Maybe 1st up as it is quieter and allows you time to settle in. You can do many day trip easily from kuta/legian. Definately move around but depending on your family and what you want to do maybe limit it to a few moves as it can be tiring and if you meet others at one place you can often enjoy their company and do things together. Jimbaran, Uluwata and Nusa dua are all so closish together you can vist as day trips.
My thoughts anyway. i love seeing lots but also like having a few bases and travelling from there.That way I always feel that i am coming home to a familiar area each night.the i know the money changer, Know the good resturant etc
