to check the cheap hotels. If you want to stay close to money changer, shops, mall, restaurants, local market, than Malioboro area is the best place. Easy to get transportation (public bus IDR2000, taxi from IDR5000-60000, becak from IDR5000).
The cheap hotel close to Jl. Malioboro are Asia Afrika hotel, Berlian hotel, Bladog motel, Peti Mas hotel (have swimming pool http://www.yogyes.com/en/yogyakarta-hotel/budget/peti-mas/).
I always go to Barumun Money changer at Inna Garuda hotel in Jl. Malioboro. They have good rate.
Taxi from airport to Malioboro area from IDR50000.
