Hi Debbie, as it is oct it is possibly in school holidays which does cost a bit more. 3 airlines fly to bali: Qantas, Garuda and Indojet/Ozjet.
As for the prices, hop onto the qantas and indojet websites and also onto Zuji or Bestflights for the prices for Garuda and qantas. It sometimes works out cheaper to fly one way with one airline and back with another. We booked ages ago for October and found it hard to get the dates we needed (school holidays) for a resonable price..... So like you mentioned your friend probably needs to book ASAP
