if you take Tubs's suggestion to travel to Kanchanaburi, it only takes 3 hrs to get there travelling by 3rd class train from Bangkok's Thonburi (Bangkok Noi) station. Sorry i don't know how long by first class train as i did it 3rd class there - and loved it :)
For the return to Bangkok i hired a cab, and that was a 2 hour journey.
I also was only there for 7 days last year but you can do a lot in 7 days. If you need some info on things to do in Bangkok besides shopping, my Bangkok and Kanchanaburi travel blogs are in the travel section of asiadana.com
