I have flown Garuda many times and still consider them to be superb. You don't get the attitude of the Australian airlines - they actually appear happy to have you on board.
Insofar as safety is concerned I think it's always open season on Garuda, some fact and some modern urban myth. Any time the airline makes an ‘error' its headlines, and yet how big was the headline that a Qantas plane had panic on it in Singapore this week when fire was evident on its wing?
In small print you will find the article in this morning's Sunday Times - and yes, after justifying Qantas reactions (i.e. sit down, stop running for the emergency doors) the reporters again felt the need to bring the Garuda incident at Perth into the Qantas storey.
Face it, flying is a safe way of travelling but every so often an airline, and I would venture to say all airlines, either misplace a plane or have a reportable safety incident. Some are reported with more enthusiasm than others.
