I would go for Sanur or Ubud. Ubud though can be a problem with the footpaths. I would steer clear of the larger places albeit the high rises in Sanur have lifts though their grounds to get anywhere are usually large. I would tend to go for the $50 per night places (that are usually smaller) and then spend some money on vehicle hire - they can then go on trips but more in control of when and where to walk etc. Sanur on the beach would be good.
If you have the time to book well ahead you could try Tegal Sari (who describe their rooms fairly well) in Ubud or the Santrians in Sanur. Both Ubud and Sanur have nice restaurants and cafes and most places will see you back to the hotel.
I would also get a cheap phone card and ring the hotels and discuss with them...they are usually not flash at emails or comprehending what you mean.
