I was talking to 2 of the sellers who (of course) massage on the beach too. We were just talking about day to day things and how their day was going when Wayan said "Aduh! I'm so tired!" and when I asked why she replied "I followed 10 people today and not one sale"
It seems that "following" is just considered part of the job as if you were stacking shelves in Coles and just your luck the 30 can cartons of Coke are on special and the delivery arrives on your shift. "OMG the Coke delivery came today and I had to stack the whole display of specials on my own and it's not as if I get paid any more"
I asked her out of the people she "follows", how many would she reasonably expect to end up buying. The reply was about 1 in 20.
I don't really know why I found that little anecdote so funny but having been on the receiving end of the persistent following on a few occasions it just amused the hell out of me. I hope I still find it funny the next time one of them is stuck to me like the proverbial.... oh well you know what I mean.
