The pearls in Lombok are sea pearls, I think the poster was asking aobut freshwater pearls, which are the imported ones from China.
The pearl industry in Lombok is mainly off Tanjung/Bangsal area, Sekotong in the protected waters near Lembar, and East Lombok in the calm waters between Lombok and Sumbawa. Never heard of any pearls grown in the south, the water has too much swell (especially in the parts earmarked for development) which is why it is a surfer's paradise.
Be careful if you do buy Lombok sea pearls - I've seen some pretty dodgy quality over the years. But you can get some lovely pearls and at very good prices (but a great deal more than chinese freshwaters)
