I always phone and confirm our flight (even though they tell you it is not necessary) 48hours before and request seating. I know that they save the first row in economy for people with babies as there is plenty of room. I am always told that seating is not guaranteed but we've always got what we wanted. Coming home we did the same thing, 48 hours before, at the Garuda office in Kuta (at the Kuta Paradiso Hotel). The lady told us that we could go back the next day with our tickets and passports to get our boarding passes but all that does is lock your seats in.You don't need tickets or passports to confirm your flight home 48 hours before. Hope this helps.
