Your friend might have been talking about using a modem and the mobile phone network for internet. What you will be doing is using a fixed line broadband connection that the restuarant is sharing using a wireless access point.
They are both similar things, but the wireless the restaurant offers will only be in the vicinity of the restaurant as the signal would be too weak further out... and the mobile network is everywhere, as you need to get signal for the mobile phone...and your laptop won't have the modem for the mobile network... but definately does for the wireless connections in the networks...

You will find a lot of the hotels are starting to offer wireless too... (well from looking on trip advisor there were a few)
