The reason you are asked to register your SIM card is intended as an anti terrorist move.
The original concept was that you were meant to put your own passport number in as part of the registration process.
The SYT's that sell SIM cards are ignorant of the real registration process and now happily key any number in to activate a card.
If you have used your own passport number to activate a card, be very careful about giving it away to someone.
By an innocent and generous offer of giving away a card it could possibly cause you a lot of grief at a later date.
Maybe the case of Mohamed Haneef last year will serve as a reminder of the dangers of giving(?) a card away.
