I took one over that was topped up 6 weeks prior to my trip. On arrival I turned it on and it had already expired. I think they need to be topped up monthly or they expire. I could not reactivate or top it up.
I had a sim card that i had just used last week, I also put a post on the forum to pass it on for free to someone who is leaving in the next week or so. It is a great idea to pass them on, as it is great to be able to give the number to people before you leave.
