Bintang Supermarket on Jl Legian/Seminyak are very helpful. Just outside the front entrance, walk along the left walkway to the mobile shop.
There is another helpful seller in Jl Padma, on right, same side as Indo National restaurant, closer to Wayan and Friends. Its in a small laneway. Just look for the board showing sim card types and costs. Also, opposite Jl Padma, if you cross Jl Legian there is a good seller on the right about 2 shops from Jl Legian.
Its easy to buy sim cards and I expect most sellers will help you get started.
You just need to make sure that you can use the 01000 prefix to call to obtain the cheap rates. Pro XL are good for sure.
When calling you may find a delay and need to get used to waiting between hearing and speaking.
