We drove on our first trip and have continued to ever since. The traffic is better than Australia as they travel much slower, so although it looks busy its not that bad. When you get out of the Kuta area the traffic is nowhere near as bad. We love it, no stopping at restaurants and shops of the drivers friends.
The main reason that we first drove was because we wanted a driver to take us to Kitamani, Singaraja and then back to Tanah Lot for sunset. All the drivers stated that it was too far for a day trip, so we hired a car and did the whole trip, making Tanah lot by sunset. For us distance is not so much a problem as it is for the Balinese.
