to this Q. We always drive ourselves, love the freedom and the price and don't find it difficult at all. The traffic, while pretty hectic in Denpasar, Kuta etc, moves a lot slower than it appears from the back seat and Indonesian drivers are very courteous and don't take themselves as seriously as drivers in Australia.
You will get a lot of replies from those that prefer to rent a driver vehemently disparaging self drive but most of the objectors have never dared to drive themselves and so are not commenting from experience.
