The first time we went around Bali was 2001 and our kids were 9,12 and 16. We just hired a car and drove and did not have problems finding accomodation. Our first stop was Medewi, where we stayed in a homestay (no pool) but the resort at Medewi did have vacancies just not in our price range. Then we went to Lovina where there was absolutle no problem heaps of accomodation. At Amed we did take a couple of hours, most of the places with vacancies were very expensive but then we found a lovely family run place, in our budget. Then we went to Ubud and also found accomodation easily. Only the place in Lovina and Ubud had pools.

We never book and have been travelling this way every year since the first trip with the kids. I think you just need to do what you are comfortable with, we would much rather see our accomodation first but if you are happy to book without seeing it then do that. Last year we ventured over to Lombok and just travelled and found places to stay and had no trouble, this year we are also going to Sumbawa and doing the same thing. We hire a car and self drive.
