We have been travelling to Bali for many years and last year decided just to take off from Sanur and spend a week just looking around the island. Surely with all the accomm available there was no need to book? Wrong. Yes there were vacancies here and there, sometimes pretty expensive. The other thing is travelling in the heat, on often difficult roads, then landing at hotels and waiting to look at rooms etc, with little ones would be very taxing I think (it was bad enough with my 75 yo dad). Just about all accom has some sort of website, you can have a look at prices and location, and book in advance. If you really get somewhere you are not happy with then you can move on, but Bali's tourist numbers are up, I think its risky. The other thing I thought I'd mention is that distances are not that great, eg if you were staying at Candi Dasa say, its not a long drive to Amed, even Permuteran to Lovina is not that far. With homestays, the cheaper you go, you may miss out on air-con, which could be a bit hard on the kids too. My daughter and I are currently planning a similiar trip with the 4 and 6yo grandsons. The east coast is going to be pretty windy at this time of year too.
