We had the same thing last year ,our passport expired in August but we had to renew it in April.When we got our new passport it wont expire untill August 2017 so we will not loose any time because we had to renew the old one early.Apparently lots of Countries require 6 mnths validity from your date of entry now.We have British passports,they cost a fortune,but Australian will most likely be the same.Hope this helps
