Some people it knocks about for many months but, depending on how soon diagnosed, how healthy the person is and the strain, it can be worked through quite quickly. Three of my children got it one after the other and recovered quite quickly. One of the children at my son's school (when we were living in Bali) unfortunately died from it.
Just take the precautions already mentioned. My rule of thumb was that if the children developed a fever that a paracetamol wouldn't touch, then I'd take them to the doctor immediately. The kids would always react well to paracetamol and the temperature would drop half a degree within half an hour.
Just be religious with insect repellant and you should be fine.
