I have done the Ubud - Amed - east coast to Lovina - back through the mountains route a couple of times. If you include the Amed area on your trip I will really reccomend including the coast road south of the Amed area (not on every map but ok conditions and beautiful landscape).
The east coast route is quite good, but not much to see between Tulamben and Lovina with the exception of Symons gallery area http://www.symonbali.com/ which is a "not so crazy version" of the Ubud gallery. The road is not very crowdwd, mostly trucks which overtake you or get in the way depending on their load and your driving style.
We paid 80k a day for an old jimney and 115k a day for a newer small car which name escapes me in oct 2007.
If you do the whole west coast route I hope you will write about it later as Iam planning to do it one day.
