We got to the airport very early and expecting to be charged but for some unknown reason we werent despite being well over. We were very pleasant and had money ready to "negotiate" with if need be.
If you are traveling Jet* You can purchase excess allowance in advance at half the price which we tried to do on the day we were leaving and when the" Oh No - what have we bought" realisation set in, but Jet* advised this had to be arranged at least 24 hours in advance.
Some of our friends upgraded their return ticket to business/starclass to get the additional 10kg each and whilst it costs more it is offset a bit by not having to pay the excess luggage.
Some forumites suggest using the PO to send stuff home which we will do next time. if you search the forum there will be lots of info. It seems a cheap option, not sure on the reliability or time.
