credit card for real emergencies such as a hospital visit, no money no help. Even if you have travel insurance they will want up front payment or a yes from your travel insurance before they will treat you.
Also helps if at the end of your stay you want to finalise the bill at the hotel with credit card, don't let it out of your sight though.
Be careful if you do use an atm card as the card comes out of the machine last, not like here in Australia where it comes out first.
