Not a problem for VOA in Lombok - many Europeans / Asians come this way - people say it is also less of a wait compared to Bali.
There are plenty of rental cars in Lombok with drivers and many speak English. I find rentals with driver actually cheaper than Bali and less of a hassle with police because of the number plate. Lombok Lovers Forum end of last year had some good tips. Lombok also has Bluebird Taxis, an airport taxi fleet and also another smaller company so in fact no freelance taxis like Bali.
