What's Bali like now? Well you're going to notice a few changes since you were last there...
My first visit was in 1981, when the population was around 200,000. It was a real fantasyland, where you were in rice paddies only five minutes out of Kuta. A trip to Kintamani was fantastic, with jungle hanging over the road and small villages dotted along the way.
It's a bit different now, however, with over 3 million on the same island. Be prepared for a shock if you're going with that image in your mind from 20 years ago. We love it still, and I reckon it's still good for families, but remember to take plenty of time out from the hussle and bustle and stay in your hotel pool when you start to feel stressed.
