Will be my 20th trip to Bali in May and I have been to phuket 3 times. In saying that, you can see which one is my preferable holiday destination - (Bali being me second home).
Phuket is well worth a visit and I will certainly be heading there again in the near future.
In my opinion I find Bali to be more family orientated.
Do not compare to Bali if you go to Phuket, as they are not meant to be compared to each other. Just take Phuket for what it is, and look for the unique things on offer.
P.S. I find Bangkok to be absolutely crazy! I usually do a quick stopover when I visit Thailand to shop, but am always glad to get out of there after my shopping venture. I have met some interesting characters there especially the taxi driver' hahehe.
