The bolts mentioned in reply to your earlier post about a Saur table would go across the table top, through the middle of the timber and would be intended to stop the top splitting along the grain as the moisture content changes from 20++ in tropical countries to 16- in southern Australia. The ends of the bolts would be countersunk below the edge surface and covered with a matching wooden plug so you would not see them unless you closely inspected the edge and found a faint outline of the circular plug.
