I have done the same but on the way back from Bali. Stay in town, not far from the airport anyway. Darwin is a nice friendly place and you are in luck to be there on a Thursday night (as we were) as the Mindil Beach markets operate on Thursday and Saturday nights. Live music, lots of food stalls, lots of people. It seems that most of Darwin goes there! The biggest eskys I have ever seen being carried in. Really relaxed atmosphere. A real buzz.
