I usually take about a grand or so cash and keep it in a safe. As others have said, don't leave money or valuables in any sight, if there isn't a safe in the room, put it in a safety deposit box at reception, most have them. Or there is this new thing called pacsafe. I bought one, and you padlock it to something in your room.

I always seem to remember to take my atm card out...
