I take half travellers cheques & half cash with a Cirrus debit card to use at ATMs if I run out of money, & a credit card for emergencies. Most people here just seem to use cash, debits from ATMs & credit cards.
Travellers cheques are not much of a hassle - sure you need your passport to exchange them but do it at a Kodak place close to your hotel - and once they know you they will accept a photocopy of your passport. Travellers cheques can be replaced quickly - cash is gone forever. Never ever leave any cash or valuables in sight in your room - it's a temptation. When you're out put things you value in your bag with a padlock on it.
If you don't have an in-room safe there will be safe deposit boxes at the hotel reception - good idea to take your own small padlock to use there. Asking what you will spend daily is like asking how long is a piece of string - depends on where you eat, what you buy etc.
Check with your bank that your debit & credit cards will work overseas. If you plan to use mostly cards then it is a good idea to notify your bank of the dates you will be away.
