If you buy Indonesian currency in Australia you will get a pathetic rate! The AUD would have to fall by an enormous amount to make such a purchase worthwhile. It's all to do with stability of national currencies; and buy/sell spreads on such currencies!

The rupiah is NOT a stable currency, nor much traded (in trade markets - the only ones which matter). The AUD is either the 4th or 5th most traded currency in the world (nothing at all to do with tourism, but all to do with resources!)

This is what really affects the exchange rates between the two currencies.
