my brother recently had documents and a wallet (with nothing of value in it) stolen from his suitcase while travelling domestic in the USA. No-one would take responsibility. His bags were locked and the locks broken for "security checks". My point being that there is very little you can do, and those that travel frequently around the world find it a common problem.
