Let me tell you, they do not fail during the flight. I now carry a "waiter's friend" style wine opener in outside pocket of my suitcase and use the knife part to open at destination.

When I went to my travelling-companion's room in Bali with my knife, he was desparately trying to work-out how to open his bag - tryng to burn it off with a light from box of matches.

I have had my bags sealed regularly as alwlays fly Garuda on Indonesian Domestic Routes and have never had the seal fail.

The system is quite fine-tuned at Garuda check-in counters and is absolutely seamless even when check-in queues are long.
