you need a pin to access your telstra card because it needs a pin to operate. A locked phone means the phone is locked to any other carrier that is what they are meaning about locked phones. Your pin unlocks your sim card.Unless you have a pin to operate your phone ( I do) then when you put an overseas sim in your unlocked phone you generally don't need a pin, however some countries have a pin with the sim card such as orange UK... confusing ain't it?

If your phone works with any sim card becasue it is unlocked... then you don't need to unlock your phone overseas. I use global roaming telstra, don't use a local sim card, only text message and my cost are generally 16 cents per text to anywhere on the local indonesian network.I don't have a prepaid telstra phone, it is a $20 plan.
