was a diet very deficient in protein. Desperately in need of snakes, kangaroos,possums & other 'nasties'. No wonder the Maori ate anything that looked like 1st class protein -thus their fondness for sheep, I suppose. They would have found our poor old convicts too tough, skinny & stringy.
