Help with a visa problem

Hi i have just received a letter from my friend who is sponsering me for a 60 day visa, but he did not put an offical stamp on and sign over it, so i dont think i can use it. The problem i have is, can i still go in on a normal 30 day one when my ticket is for over 30 days?
I will go into Perth tomorrow to see if i can use the letter but i dont hold my breath, any ideas? thanks
