But its value is somewhat limited.
The reason being that around Kuta/Legian/Denpasar, one way streets are the norm, so you can't always go where you think you should.
Also, street names change, and also place names can be different.
Bushes and trees obscure signs, even if there are any signs.
Also, try to get somewhere by showing a local the map book (or map) and pointing at the place you want to go!!
The concept of maps seems to be alien to them, and there will be much rotating of the book and puzzled looks before a cursory wave of an arm in the rough direction you probably should go!!
You are probably better to become familiar with a few key towns or places around the island, and use these for general navigational purposes.
Having said this, we love driving around, and on average cover 1500 km each trip.
As far as hiring goes, there are many places, but be sure to minimise the insurance excess (normally $US1000 standard) to as little as possible.
Rates for a small car are around 80,000 per day.
Also check spare tyre, wipers (Radio will have broken aerial!!)and head straight to the nearest fuel stop, because the vehicle will be bone dry empty when you get it.
Ensure the pump is zeroed, or you will be paying for the fuel the guy in front had as well!!
